Under 5% of funds contributed to StandProud goes to covering StandProud's administrative costs.
StandProud maintains only minimal staff in the U.S., and StamdProud personnel in DR Congo see beneficiaries on a daily basis.
Few things are more basic to a physically disabled individual than the ability to move about with dignity and to be as independent as possible. Helping people to secure essential orthopedic equipment is thus nearly always a very high-impact activity, even for those whose disability is not extreme, and some pieces of equipment (e.g. canes, shoes adapted for braces, leather straps) cost as little as $10-$25. Donors who contribute enough ($500-$2000) to cover the expenses of enabling people to stand and walk for the first time since infancy can have the satisfaction of knowing that they've changed someone´s life dramatically, forever.
Since braces are personally fitted and not interchangeable, and since they are of little value to the non-disabled, such problems as theft, diversion, and resale are virtually non-existent.
As the orthopedic equipment is made by local craftsman using mostly locally-available materials, and as there are no intermediary expenses associated with the equipment provided, costs for adequate, good-quality orthopedic equipment can be kept to a minimum--in most cases considerably less than what similarly-functioning equipment would cost in the developed world.
[1] Please do not send in-kind donations. Because postal service in the Congo is very unreliable, and as customs duties charged for the few gifts that actually do make it through the system are often much greater than the real value of the item, StandProud cannot agree to forward any non-monetary contributions and can accept no responsibility (including returns) for any such gifts received.
